Country Director
Pure Water for the World, Inc
The goal of Pure Water for the World, Inc. is to prevent children from dying and suffering from contaminated water that causes pain and misery associated with intestinal parasites and illness. We do this through local manufacturing of sand water filters and by providing sustainable clean, safe drinking water systems to families, schools, and communities in developing countries. Among other programs, Pure Water for the World (PWW) provides a package of services to reduce disease and improves the health of children by providing point of use water purification, teacher training, and hygiene education to schools throughout Haiti. In 18 months, PWW has trained 1,640 teachers to provide hygiene education and manage the filter systems in 725 schools which served over 202,000 students.
Purpose of the Position:
The Country Director is responsible for the delivery of Pure Water for the World’s (PWW) program in Haiti based on an agreed plan and budget. Country Director works in consultation with and reports directly to the Executive Director.
Country Director:
Provides leadership for all phases of PWW’s operations in Haiti with special emphasis on implementation of projects, development of partnerships, and fund development, including emergency response.
Responsibilities:
Strategic–
• Implement PWW’s overall goals to develop sustainable projects
• Develop with consultants and Executive Director of PWW, Operations Manager, and Program Manager, a plan for the next six months for the immediate relief effort, infrastructure including increased production of water filters, development and long term plans for recovery and reconstruction phases
• Build strategic partnerships with governmental, national, and international organizations to strengthen and support the work of PWW
Management–
• Manage all aspects of Haitian operations including production
• Manage and supervise staff in Haiti and evaluate the staff at least annually
• Insure PWW is operating in accordance with all legal requirements including labor laws
• Put in place where needed and maintain all proper financial procedures, records, and reports
• Negotiate funding for and implement partnerships
• Write contracts for services with supporting and partnership agencies
• Insure that PWW contracts are properly executed, administered, and reported
• Develop and manage a security plan to include movement of all people – staff and visitors – in and out of the country in case of emergency,
• Manage the movement of PWW materials and other assets
• Ensure that program deliverables are completed on time, within budget and agreed upon donor requirements
Employee Management–
• Recruit, interview, and hire senior personnel and oversee all other employment including those involved in filter production
• Supervise senior staff and build effective teams within the organization
• Develop staff training methods and development program to encourage succession and ensure some internal development of management
• Set salary scales in consultation with the Operations Manager
Fund Development
• In cooperation with the Executive Director generate and write funding proposals,
• Research funding sources
• Meet and work with potential donors who travel to Haiti
• Represent PWW at conferences, events
• Represent PWW to the media and handle PR within Haiti
Partnership Development
• Maintain communication with current partners
• Develop partnerships with governmental entities, non governmental agencies and businesses
Candidate Profile
• Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree
• Experience in international development efforts, and in management of emergency relief work within a complex and potentially volatile setting
• Demonstrated record of increasing leadership and management responsibility
• Experience in financial and human resource management in a complex, fast moving context
• Able to plan ahead and identify both risks and opportunities.
• Able to multi-task – requires a high energy person able to live and operate effectively under difficult circumstances within limited resources
• Takes the initiative and has demonstrated problem solving skills
• Able and willing to work within agreed strategies
• Technical knowledge of water and sanitation issues would be advantageous
• Knowledge of Haiti and the Haitian context would be an asset
• Patient–calm under stress with a sense of humor.
• Demonstrated capacity in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint
• Good communication skills, oral and written in English and in French, facility in Creole desirable
• Able to work under pressure and deal with multiple tasks
• Able to supervise and lead a work team and motivate personnel
• Willing to travel throughout Haiti as required
• Current driver’s license
• Able with necessary paperwork to travel to United States and Canada
